Mission Statement

Background

Twenty five years ago the Methodist church and Rowland Hill's Tabernacle joined to form the Wotton-under-Edge United Church. The constitution of the new church stated that "The main aim of the union is to seek a more effective witness to the power of God and the saving grace of Jesus Christ; offering Christian worship, fellowship, witness and service in the name of Christ and to the glory of God."

Building on the solid foundations of our predecessors, we now look to the future as a group of Christians seeking to serve God and this town and neighbourhood in an effective and practical way through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Belief

We believe that God is one; that as Father he loves everyone; that as Jesus he was born, lived, died and rose again to restore our relationship with him; that as holy Spirit he works in and through us to spread his love in the world which he created. The consequences of this belief should be worked out not only in each Christian but also in the life of the church.

Like our predecessors, therefore, we offer:

Worship

We believe that the glorification of God in corporate worship is central to the life of our church.

Fellowship

All the activities of our church are open to anyone who wants to join them. We offer our friendship but, more importantly, our support and companionship to everyone who wishes to know God better and to experience deeper faith in and commitment to him through learning, prayer and discussion.

Witness

We look for ways of affirming our own faith in God, of showing others the truth, value and relevance for them of sharing that faith, and of resisting hatred, lovelessness and cruelty wherever they are found.

Service

We believe that practical service within the church and the wider community is the right and natural response to God's love for us and the example he calls us to follow. In serving others, we serve God himself.
